One letter in your DNA decides your earwax (yes, really)

Most of what we write on this blog comes with the same honest disclaimer: common variants are small leans, many genes contribute, lifestyle matters more. This article is the exception. Earwax is the trait where genetics actually behaves the way school led you to believe: one gene, one letter, done.

The textbook trait hiding in your ears

Earwax comes in two types: wet (sticky, amber) and dry (flaky, gray). Which one you have is determined by a single position in the ABCC11 gene, rs17822931, and the 2006 discovery paper in Nature Genetics said it in its title: this SNP is the determinant of human earwax type. Carry at least one C and your earwax is wet; carry two Ts and it is dry. No percentages, no polygenic hedging. It is the closest thing your raw DNA file has to a light switch.

The world map of this variant is striking. The dry-type T allele is overwhelmingly common in East Asia, where most people carry two copies, and rare in Europe and Africa, where wet type dominates. Population geneticists still debate why the difference got so extreme, with climate adaptation the usual suspect.

The part people actually care about

ABCC11 does not only run your ears. The same transporter works in the sweat glands of your armpits, where it exports the precursor molecules that skin bacteria turn into body odor. Two-T carriers export far less of the raw material, so there is less for bacteria to work with, and noticeably less odor. In Japan, where the dry type is the majority, this connection is well enough known that the wet-type minority historically sought treatment for what is a completely normal trait elsewhere.

Which leads to the delightfully practical consequence: a meaningful share of two-T carriers get little to nothing out of deodorant, and surveys in the UK found many of them buy and use it anyway, out of pure social habit. If your file says T/T at rs17822931 and you have always privately suspected the deodorant industry was not built for you, your genome agrees.

Why we love this gene

Not because earwax matters. Because ABCC11 is the perfect calibration point for reading everything else in your file. This is what a real one-gene trait looks like: one position, deterministic, visible in the mirror (well, the cotton swab). Almost nothing else in consumer genetics works this way. Caffeine, sleep, weight, mood, all of those are small leans stacked on lifestyle. When a report, or a chatbot, presents a complex trait with earwax-level confidence, something has gone wrong in the translation.
