Why you sneeze at the sun (and your friends think you're making it up)
You walk out of a dim hallway into bright sunlight and, one to three sneezes, every time. Meanwhile the person next to you has never done this in their life and quietly suspects you are performing. You are not. The photic sneeze reflex is real, it runs in families, and it has one of the best acronyms in all of medicine: researchers in the 1980s named it ACHOO, Autosomal-dominant Compelling Helio-Ophthalmic Outburst.
A reflex with crossed wires
The leading explanation is beautifully mundane: crossed signaling between neighboring cranial nerves. The trigeminal nerve handles facial sensation, including the nasal tickle that triggers a sneeze; the optic pathway handles the sudden-bright-light response, including the pupil reflex. In photic sneezers, a burst of light seems to spill a little activation from the visual pathway into the sneeze circuit, and the brain reads sunlight as a nose tickle. Harmless, fast, and completely involuntary.
Estimates of how common it is vary widely between studies and populations, roughly from one in ten to one in three people, partly because "do you sneeze at the sun?" turns out to be a surprisingly squishy survey question.
The genetics: a study made of volunteers
The photic sneeze earned a place in genetics history in 2010, when one of the first large web-based, participant-driven genetic studies, run on thousands of consumer-test customers who answered trait surveys online, found a common variant near the ZEB2 gene associated with the reflex. It was a proof moment for the whole idea that ordinary people's test data plus questionnaires could produce real discoveries: the sun sneeze, of all things, helped legitimize consumer genetics research.
Honesty about the fine print, because that is how we do things: a later genome-wide study in a Chinese population also found a signal at this region, but the studies do not agree on which allele leans which way. That kind of unresolved direction is common for small-effect quirk traits, and it is exactly the sort of caveat a report should say out loud rather than bury.
Does it matter? Almost not, and that's the charm
The photic sneeze has essentially no health consequences. The only practical notes ever offered seriously: it is worth knowing about if you drive out of dark tunnels into sunlight a lot, and sunglasses genuinely help. That is the entire clinical literature of advice.
