Is happiness genetic? What 300,000 genomes actually said
"Happiness is genetic" is one of those headlines that returns every summer. What the big study found
In 2016, a consortium analyzed genomes and questionnaire data from almost 300,000 people, the first study large enough to find specific variants for subjective wellbeing, along with related signals for depressive symptoms and neuroticism.
It worked, technically. But the effect of each variant was minuscule, a fraction of a percent of the differences between people. Even summed, the discovered variants explained only a sliver of the heritability the twin studies promised.
