Best DNA upload sites: where to upload your raw DNA data in 2026

Your 23andMe or AncestryDNA results came with a hidden bonus: the raw data file behind them. The ancestry report you saw used a sliver of it. A whole ecosystem of sites exists to squeeze more out of that file, and they differ wildly in what they do, what they charge, and what happens to your data after you hit upload. This is the honest map of where that file is worth uploading in 2026.

Full disclosure before anything else: we make one of the tools on this list. We have tried to be as fair to the others as we would want them to be to us, and where a competitor is genuinely the better pick for a job, we say so.

No file yet? Our step-by-step guide covers every provider.

The quick map

Eight sites, five columns that actually decide the choice. Filter by what you came for, and click a name to jump to the full verdict.

Helisoma

H$49 oncefree previewfile never uploaded

Helisoma is built around one rule nothing else on this list follows: your raw file is read in your browser and never reaches our servers. The only thing sent is the small set of markers the report actually uses, well under a megabyte, and you can delete it at any time. If data handling is your first question, and it should be, that is the strongest answer on this page.

The report stays deliberately in the wellness lane: sleep and chronotype, caffeine response, nutrition markers, training and recovery, stress, longevity. Every card shows your genotype, states the effect at its honest size, and links the study it comes from, so you can check our work. And the part no other site here offers: you connect the finished report to Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini and ask questions in plain language, in the AI you already use. Claude reads it live; the others take the report once and keep it as context.

None of this asks for faith. Drop your file on the free analysis page and the preview builds right on the page, before an account or a card ever comes up.

✓ Pick it for wellness you can act on, an AI that finally knows your genetics, and a file that stays on your device.

✗ Skip it for ancestry, relative matching, or disease-risk screening. We don't do those, on purpose.

Promethease

P$25 per reportfile uploadedSNPedia depth

The veteran, with an honest 2026 caveat. On paper Promethease is still the deepest read a chip file can get: it matches your raw DNA data against SNPedia, a community-maintained wiki of published SNP research, and returns thousands of entries for $25. In practice the service has grown unreliable. The site is still up and still takes payment, but user communities have spent recent months reporting reports that fail to generate, disappear, or render as gibberish, and the site itself has barely changed in years. When it works, nothing matches its breadth. The output was always dense, unfiltered, and salted with rare clinical findings that consumer chips are known to miscall, which is exactly how people end up terrified by a false positive. Fuller comparison, including what to use instead, here.

✓ Pick it if you want SNPedia's research-grade breadth and accept the risk that your $25 report may not come out clean.

✗ Skip it if you need the report to just work, or if a scary-looking false positive would ruin your month. Anything alarming needs a clinical test, not a chip read.

Genetic Genie

Gfreeno accountnot stored

The best no-strings first look on this list. Methylation and detox panels plus GenVue Discovery, which checks your file against ClinVar's catalog of disease-linked variants. Donation-supported, no account, and it states plainly that your data is not stored or shared. The same false-positive caution as Promethease applies, doubled for the ClinVar check.

✓ Pick it as a free, no-strings first look at your file.

✗ Skip the ClinVar section unless you're prepared to treat every finding as "verify clinically first".

Gfree tierprices after signupfile stored

The most approachable of the bunch: upload, get free trait previews, unlock more with paid tiers. The traits lean entertainment (our comparison), and one thing deserves saying before you upload rather than after: pricing is only shown once you have created an account and handed over your file, which we think is ordering backwards.

✓ Pick it for casual fun and ancestry extras.

✗ Skip it if you want to know the price before handing over your file. Decide your budget first.

SelfDecode

S$$$ bundlessubscription platformfile stored

The biggest health play on this list: a large report library, polygenic risk scores, an in-platform AI coach, and lab-test integration, sold as premium bundles that run into hundreds of dollars. If you want one platform to keep feeding you health recommendations over time, it is a serious product. The difference between us is philosophy as much as price: subscription platform versus pay-once report, a built-in coach versus the AI you already use. Our take here.

✓ Pick it if you want an all-in platform and the price fits your commitment.

✗ Skip it if countdown timers and upsells at checkout put you off, or you just want to pay once.

Sequencing.com

Sfree uploadpaid appsfile stored

The app store approach: upload from virtually any test, then browse a marketplace of reports and apps on top, some free, most paid. The variety is the appeal and the catch in one, because quality varies app by app, and the work of checking what evidence a given app rests on falls to you.

✓ Pick it to browse many different report types in one place.

✗ Skip the checkout until you've checked what evidence a given app is built on.

GEDmatch

Gfreegenealogyfile stored

The genealogy community's free workhorse for cross-company relative matching and admixture tools, and it has been reuniting families for years. Know before you upload that it allows opt-in law-enforcement matching, which is either fine or a dealbreaker depending on your views.

✓ Pick it to find relatives across testing companies.

✗ Skip it if the law-enforcement angle makes you uneasy. Health isn't its job either.

FamilyTreeDNA

Ffree transfersmall unlock feefile stored

Free transfers into a real, actively used matching database, with a small fee to unlock every tool. One of the oldest names in genetic genealogy, and it does its actual job well: if a meaningful match exists, this is one of the places it surfaces.

✓ Pick it for serious relative matching in an established database.

✗ Skip it for health. That's not what it's for.

More specialized options

  • LivingDNA: free transfers, strongest on regional detail for British and Irish ancestry.
  • MyTrueAncestry: compares your file against thousands of ancient archaeological samples, Vikings, Romans and beyond. Entertaining, priced like a hobby.
  • YFull: the deep end of paternal (Y-DNA) and maternal (mtDNA) lineage analysis; wants sequencing data, not a chip export.
  • DNA Painter: not an upload-and-interpret site but a beloved companion for mapping which chromosome segments came from which ancestor.

Before you upload anywhere: three questions

  1. What happens to the raw file? "Deleted after processing" is okay. "Never leaves your device" is better. "Stored indefinitely" deserves a real read of the privacy policy, because a genome leak cannot be rotated like a password.
  2. What is the pricing shape? One-time means the analysis is the product. Subscription means your continued attention is the product. Hidden-until-signup means decide your ceiling before uploading.
  3. Where do the claims come from? If a report will not show you its sources, you cannot tell its science from its marketing.

And whatever you do, do not skip the sites entirely and paste your raw data into a chatbot instead: that is the one option on this page with all of the downsides and none of the accountability.

Quick answers

Is it safe to upload raw DNA data? It depends entirely on the site's data handling, which is why it gets its own color-coded column in our table. Safest is a file that never leaves your device; next best is processing without storage; everything else comes down to how much you trust the company, indefinitely, because a leaked genome cannot be rotated like a password.

Can I upload my raw DNA for free? Yes: Genetic Genie, GEDmatch, and FamilyTreeDNA transfers cost nothing, Genomelink and Sequencing.com have free tiers, and Helisoma's preview is free and runs right on the upload page, no account needed. Watch what each free tier exists to sell you afterward.

Can I just ask ChatGPT to analyze my file instead? We tested it seriously. With the right tools it reads single positions better than its reputation suggests, but it sweeps nothing, improvises every answer, and your genome ends up on a chat company's servers. The full experiment is here.

The file is already yours. Pick the tool that matches your question, and if the wellness lane is yours, our free preview builds in about a minute and costs nothing to look at.
