Your 23andMe, AncestryDNA or MyHeritage results came with a raw data file, and the report you saw used a sliver of it. Other sites can read the rest. They differ in what they answer, what they charge, and what they do with your file. Full disclosure: we make one of them. Where another site is the better pick for a job, we say so.

What changed in 2025 and 2026
- MyHeritage stopped accepting files from other companies in 2025. Its new kits are whole genome sequencing.
- FamilyTreeDNA retired its paid unlock for uploaded files on August 18, 2026. Free uploads still get relative matches.
- 23andMe changed owners in July 2025, after a bankruptcy sale to the TTAM Research Institute. If you tested there, it is a good moment to download your file and decide yourself where it lives.

Matches your file against SNPedia, a research wiki, and returns thousands of entries for $25. Nothing reads deeper for the money. The catch is the format: dense, unfiltered, and mixed with rare disease findings that consumer chips often get wrong. That is how people end up scared by a false alarm. Our comparison.

The genealogy community's free workhorse: match with relatives who tested at any company, plus admixture tools. Police matching is opt-in, which is either fine or a dealbreaker for you. Health is not its job.

FamilyTreeDNA
Upload your file for free and get relative matches in one of the oldest genealogy databases. Since August 2026 the extra tools for uploaded files are no longer sold; the company now steers people to its own test.

More specialized options
- MyTrueAncestry: compares your file with ancient DNA samples. Entertaining, priced like a hobby.
- YFull: deep paternal and maternal lineage analysis; it wants sequencing data, not a chip file.
- DNA Painter: not an upload site but a free tool for mapping which DNA came from which ancestor.
Before you upload anywhere: three questions
- What happens to the file? "Never leaves your device" beats "deleted after processing", which beats "stored". A leaked genome cannot be reset like a password.
- What is the pricing shape? One-time means the report is the product. A subscription or an upsell funnel means your attention is. If prices only appear after signup, decide your ceiling first.
- Where do the claims come from? If a report won't show its sources, you can't tell its science from its marketing.
Quick answers
Is it safe to upload raw DNA data?
It depends on what the site does with the file, which is why it has its own column above. Safest is a file that never leaves your device; next is processing without storage. Everything else depends on how long you trust the company, because a genome cannot be changed after a leak.
Can I upload my raw DNA for free?
